Kenny a Condition and Value Survey was conducted on board the 1961 Chris-Craft Constellation - "Independence" beginning on 10 August and 1 September 2005 at Yank Marine Inc., Tuckahoe, NJ and Sunset Marina in Margate, NJ. The ships papers were on board and in order. The Chris-Craft - Hull Identification Number of CAA 55 008 and
Lloyds & U.S.C.G. number of 286434 was verified.

The Independence is a beautiful work of art. The 1961 Chris-Craft Constellation is one of the biggest and the best in the Chris-Craft fleet. The vessel is under restoration and is in remarkable condition."

Hull:

Construction

The vessel is double planked mahogany carvel construction on transverse sawn and steam-bent white oak frames, fastened with bronze screws and bolts. The transom is of mahogany. Planking is fastened to frames, seam battens and to the stem and transom. The planks are set edge to edge to forma smooth hull; it is also seam battened. That is, Chris Craft utilizes a batten over seam on the inside of the hull. Butt blocks are installed As part of the longitudinal system), that are shaped short planks that connect the buts of conventional planks.

Exterior Hull Condition

 

Above the water line

The topsides are 6” x ⅞" planks on batten seams. The hull was sighted and was free of fractures and stress cracks. A stainless steel rail is fitted to the mahogany rubrail.

Finish

The finish is roller painted. Paint is holding well. Smooth and fair. Seams are good.

Color

White from boot top to upper spray rail. Dark Blue from upper spray rail to gunwales

Below the water line

The bottom is double planked with 6” x ⅞" longitudinal mahogany planking on top of ½" plywood. The bottom was sighted and was free of fractures and stress cracks. No visible damage observed

Finish

The finish is roller painted with anti–fouling marine finish. Paint is holding well. Smooth and fair. Seams are good.

11 on each side. Total 22 fitted with fiberglass inserts. The all appear to be the original Algonac Brass Works portlights that were made for Chris Craft.

Stringer Condition

The stringer system appeared to be well fastened, un-decayed and in sound structural condition.

White Oak - appears sound. Butt joint between lower stem and forefoot appears tight and secure.

Type of Transom

Mahogany – appeared sound. The planking appeared tight to the frames

Fastened with #12 – silicon bronze screws.

Topside main frames above the chine are 1 ½” x 3 ½” on 27 centers.
Topside intermediate frames above the chine are 1 1/8” x 1 Ύ” on 26 ½” centers

The sawn main frames are notched to receive 7/8” x 1 Ύ” longitudinal battens that cover the interior side of the plank seams.
The bottom frames below the chine are doubled with dimensions of 2 7/8 x 4 ½”.
The frames continue from the topside to a point just short of the white oak keelson. The keel is fastened with bronze bolts.

Fit for intended use. Stainless steel stanchions with varnished mahogany handrails run the perimeter of the fore, side and aft deck. Stanchions and lifelines are secure. Cast bronze bases are through-bolted with stainless steel bolts, backer plates, washers, and lock nuts. The height conform to the 30 – 32” height standard. The installation method is common for the size and class of vessel. Good cosmetic condition.

Toe Rail

Fit for intended use. 3” varnished mahogany. Good cosmetic condition.

Ventilation

Fit for intended use. 20” round mahogany hatch with safety glass on the fore deck Two chromed cast bronze air scopes located amidships on the caprail supply air to the engine compartment. Good cosmetic condition.

Scuppers

Fit for intended use. Four - 4” scuppers for drainage:

2 amidships - port and starboard. Good cosmetic condition;

2 aft deck - port and starboard. Good cosmetic condition.

Deck Fittings, Chocks and Cleats

Fit for intended use.

The bow is fitted with a chromed cast bronze bow lead and mahogany Samson post.

The side decks are fitted with 2 - 12” chromed cast bronze mid-rail closed chocks and 2 - 10” chromed cast bronze torpedo style cleats.

There is a chromed cast bronze Samson Post 6" high and 6' square each side of the aft deck at the stern.

All are through-bolted with stainless steel bolts, backing plates, washers and nuts. The installation method is common for the size and class of vessel. Good cosmetic condition.

Hawse Pipe

Fit for intended use. 2 chromed cast bronze 6-1/4" x 4-1/2" oval on bow to feed anchor rode into locker. Good cosmetic condition.
