Tuesday, May 04, 1999 at Fernandina Beach Marina With the engine and transmission fluids checked and all the electronic gear tested, Independence got underway at 06:45 from the Riverview Marina and again headed north on the ICW towards Fernandina Beach. Breakfast on-board was toasted English muffins with butter and coffee. The crew is working in two person, three-hour shifts, which means that everyone works two shifts per day navigating and driving. Lunch on-board was assorted lunchmeat sandwiches, made to order, with lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayonnaise. The trip was sunny and warm with the temperature at about eighty degrees. Late in the day, the Starboard engine stopped working. It was determined that it occurred because the fuel crossover valves which equalize the fuel in each tank were closed which meant that each fuel tank was supplying fuel to only one engine. In attempting to restart the engine, the engine starter stopper working. Using only the port engine, Independence continued on to her planned destination of Fernandina Harbor Marina in Fernandina. Independence refueled taking on 198 gallons of diesel fuel. After refueling, everyone enjoyed a good dinner at a local restaurant in town. |
