Friday, May 7, 1999, Day 7 at Half Moon Marina near Saint Catherine’s Sound, Georgia

With the engine and transmission fluids checked and all the electronic gear tested, Independence got underway at 06:55 moving north. The weather was cloudy with a strong chance of rain. Breakfast on-board was scrambled eggs, bacon, English muffin and coffee. After a weeks cruising Independence is performing well. Some blue smoke from the starboard engine, and a couple of small leaks in the decking and cabin-top but nothing serious or significant. The guesstimate was that the smoke was caused by a valve problem. After a decade of inactivity, she is getting a good run and doing well. At mid day the clouds were broken and the temperature around eighty. Lunch on-board was "get what you want." At 17:00, Independence pulled into the Datawa Island Marina, which is located halfway between Hilton Head, and Charleston South Carolina. Shortly after docking a couple came over to the boat and started to examine her. It turned out that they had been one of the previous owners of Independence. They had been responsible for some of the modifications that had been made over her forty-year history. Independence refueled taking on 166 gallons of diesel fuel. Fuel consumption is running at 16 GPH. Dinner was at the marina restaurant and enjoyed by all.
