Naples, Florida to Longport, New Jersey (Day 8)
![]()
Saturday, May 8, 1999, Day 8 at Datawa Island Marina, SC With provisions starting to run low, it was decided to get a late start after reprovisioning the boat. For several days there was the smell of diesel fuel inside the Saloon when Independence would pull in for the night. By morning, the smell would have dissipated. Several general inspections were conducted but they did not reveal the source of the problem. Before starting out to do the shopping another inspection was made, it was discovered that there was a small misting fuel leek on an original fuel line on the port engine. The reprovisioning trip turned into a fuel line and fittings parts hunt in the closest town to the marina, Beaufort. By 12:30 the parts were on board and installed, The fuel that leaked out during the repairs was contained, and Independence was ready to get underway. With such a late start, it was decided to head to Charleston as the next stop. The trip to Charleston was generally uneventful with the exception of the starboard transmission starting to act-up and seemed to be starved of power. The sky was clear, the sea calm and the temperature in the mid eighties. Independence pulled into the gas dock at Charleston at 18:00 to take on fuel. The problem with the starboard engine turned out to be a fuel valve that was not completely open. Opening it corrected the issue. Independence refueled taking on 70 gallons of diesel fuel. Dinner was at the Charleston City Docks Marina. |
