Sunday, May 9, 1999, Day 9 at Charleston City Docks Marina, SC

The day began at 05:45 with hot coffee. With the engine and transmission fluids checked and all the electronic gear tested, Independence cast off the dock lines and was underway by 06:10 heading across the Charleston Harbor to again pick-up the ICW going north. Breakfast on-board was eggs to order with bacon, toast and butter and jelly. The sky was clear with a light wind, seas calm and it looked to be a pleasant day. The starboard tachometer stopped working, probably because of a broken cable. Lunch on-board was baloney and cheese with lettuce, and mustard or mayonnaise. By mid day Independence was making a steady ten knots north. Oil consumption on the starboard engine seemed normal while oil consumption by the transmission was running at a quart a day. After two days of discussion among the crew, it was decided that the transmission seal on the starboard transmission was the problem.  There was more blue smoke coming from the starboard engine exhaust but the overall performance was fine. The day ended at 18:00 when Independence pulled into the fuel dock at Dock Holiday Marina in North Mertal Beach South Carolina. Independence refueled taking on 161 gallons of diesel fuel. Fuel consumption is running at 13 GPH. After refueling and an enjoyable dinner at the Dock Holiday Marina, everybody was in their bunk by 22:30.
