Thursday, May 13, 1999, Day 13, Midway Marina in Coinjock, NC With the engine and transmission fluids checked and all the electronic gear tested, Independence was underway at 06:15 from the Midway Marina and heading to Norfolk Virginia. The weather forecast was for broken clouds in the morning and then afternoon rain and thunderstorms with high seas. Because of this, the decision was made to travel up the Chesapeake Bay and then through the C & D Canal and down the Delaware River. This will add several more days to the trip. By 16:45 Independence was making her way across the lower western Chesapeake Bay and up the eastern shore towards Onancock Creek. Small craft warnings had been posted earlier. The weather was gray and over-casts with intermittent rain. The wind was coming out of the northeast at fifteen knots with wave highest were running at two to three feet and white caps breaking. The temperature felt as though it was in the high sixties. Independence pulled up to the Onancock Dock at 21:35 and tided-up for the night. Dinned was at a very nice old restaurant on the dock. |
