Saturday, May 15, 1999, day 15 at Onancock Dock in Onancock Virginia

With small craft warnings still flying, Independence got underway at 06:50 and again headed out into the Chesapeake Bay. In the protected cove of Onancock the overall weather conditions seemed favorable. After traveling out to the outer channel marker and turning north Independence again ran into three foot waves and winds blowing at twenty knots, gusting to thirty knots. After a thirty minutes of fighting the seas with wave spray coming over the bow the decision was again made to turn back and lay over in Onancock. The day was spent doing small choirs around the boat and in general relaxing. Dinner in the evening was at a small Italian restaurant in the town of Onancock. The decision was made to try to get underway at first light in the morning around 05:30, in order to get a start up the Chesapeake before the morning winds picked up.
