Sunday, May 16, 1999, Day 16 at Onancock Dock in Onancock Virginia

The 05:00 weather forecast for the day was the worst yet. The winds and sea conditions in the lower Chesapeake Bay was predicted to be stronger than the previous days while conditions in the upper Chesapeake Bay were forecasted to be better. At 05:00 it was decided to not even try and go out to sea. At that point, everyone went back to bed. Breakfast on-board was French toast and bacon with coffee. By 08:30 the weather had cleared considerably and the decision was made to try and resume the trip north. Independence got underway at 08:45 and proceeded out into the lower Chesapeake Bay. The winds were out of the north at fifteen knots with the seas running about two feet. Independence started making her way north to the C & D canal. Lunch on-board was tuna-fish salad sandwiches on egg roles with chips. By 14:00 the seas had diminished slightly but still with a strong wind out of the north. The sky was cloudy and overcast. At 18:00 Independence pulled into The Yacht Basin in Annapolis Maryland and refueled taking on 210 gallons of diesel fuel. Dinner was at a local restaurant close by the marina.
