Monday, May 17, 1999, day 17 at The Yacht Basin in Annapolis Maryland With the engine and transmission fluids checked and all the electronic gear tested, Independence got underway at 06:05 traveling north towards the C & D canal and the crossing over to the Delaware River. The sky was overcast with low clouds and a temperature in the mid fifties. The seas were calm with the wave heights running around one foot. The wind was coming out of the north east at about five to ten knots. At 11:25 Independence went under the last of the six bridges and came out of the C & D canal and turned south heading down the Delaware River to Cape May, New Jersey. Independence pulled into her new home at Sunset Marina in Margate, New Jersey at 20:17. Independence covered 1,121 miles in 17 days and consumed 1,951 gallons of diesel fuel. Her “Normal” standard cruising speed was 1,400 RPMs (66%) with a fuel burn rate of 16.3 GPH at 9 MPH or 8 Knots for an overall burn rate of 1.7 gallons per mile. |
