Independence got underway and headed out the Great Egg Harbor Inlet to the ‘GE’ buoy and then turned South towards Cape May, NJ and the forty mile trip to the South Jersey Marina, Cape May, NJ.

Independence was cruising about a mile offshore with some rolling of the boat given the 2’ rollers hitting abeam on the port side.

Bob Whipple - navigator & helmsman, Tom Kenny - helmsman

Cruising speed during the trip to Cape May was 1,500 RPMs with an average speed of 10 knots. Approximate distance 40 NM.

Independence pulled into Cape May harbor and tied up along the transient face dock at the South Jersey Marina. Maneuvering into the transient dock is a little tricky. One needs to head to the last day mark at the far end of the harbor and then make a slow but hard turn to starboard around the commercial fishing boats of the Cold Spring Fish & Supply Co. That is followed by another slow but hard turn to port in order to line-up with the two-sided transient dock. It is not hard but one needs to be on ones game.

The bathrooms and showers South Jersey Marina, Cape May, NJ were clean, convenient and just a short walk away. The transient dock was fully equipped with water, fuel and pump-out facilities.

Independence tanks were topped off with 190 Gal.

Meals:
Lunch on the way to Cape May consisted of snacks and soda.
Dinner was at The Lobster House where there is never a bad meal.
